Thank you for your interest in working for the lab!

The Student Research Assistant Application is currently closed, but will open again in Fall 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who should apply?

Anyone with an interest working in one of the lab’s content areas. These include intersections of the criminal legal system and the following topics: HIV prevention or exposure, opioid use disorder, social determinants of health, climate change, and community policing.

While we can’t guarantee that there will be opening on every project team, we will do our best to match your skills and interests to a team’s needs. We value diverse experiences, especially lived experiences with the criminal legal system. We encourage anyone with an interest in our content areas to apply!

What kind of work do student research assistants do within the lab?

Tasks will depend on skills and experience. Examples of student research assignments may include gathering data for research projects, administrative tasks such as taking notes or proof-reading drafts, and creating recruitment flyers or other public-facing materials. Work with the lab should support project needs, and may evolve over time.

Working with the lab also comes with professional expectations. These include promptly replying to emails, regularly attending scheduled weekly and quarterly meetings, managing tasks in Asana, and completing accurate timecards on a bi-weekly basis.

How many hours a week do student research assistants work?

Previous research assistants have worked anywhere from 4-16 hours per week. Assigned hours will depend both on your ability and needs as a research assistant as well as the needs of the project.

Should I reach out to you after I’ve submitted my application?

We receive a large number of emails from people seeking a role with the lab – too many to reply individually! After you have submitted your application, please be patient. Emailing anyone at the lab will not speed up our reply.

Still have questions?

You can email us at BCHJStudents@duke.edu - please note, emailing will not speed up our reply to your application.
